Jim Cooney is an award-winning choreographer who has taught Jazz, Tap, and Musical Theater across the world. The New York Times profiled his class in their Theater and Dance sections and praised him for training dancers with "audition must haves: character, motivation, and endurance." He's taught everyone from absolute beginners to professionals and celebrities such as former American Idol contestants, coaching Katie Couric how to lindy hop, and serving on the team rehearsing MTV's Rich Girls star Ally Hilfiger on her Broadway debut. He is proudly the faculty advisor of BDC's elite Professional Semester training program.

Recent projects include Broadway Bares at Hammerstein Ballroom, Oxygen’s The Prancing Elites Project, One Night Only: An Evening with Alex Newell at Pittsburgh CLO’s Cabaret at Theater Square, two shows for Holland America Line, an Oral-B commercial, BC Beat at Cielo nightclub, Associate Choreographer of WikiMusical featuring Brenda Braxton for the New York Musical Theater Festival directed/choreographed by Richard J.Hinds, and Nothing But Trash (co-choreographed with Greg Zane, and nominated for an Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Choreography/Movement).

Additional choreography credits: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition featuring Tony award winner Kristin Chenoweth; both seasons of The Glee Project for Oxygen's Upfronts; The Today Show featuring Little Richard, Pat Boone and Didi Conn; The Accused at Tropicana in Atlantic City which won Best Casino Show of the Year; Associate Choreographer of Guys and Dolls at Great Lakes Theater directed/choreographed by Tony nominated Dan Knetchges; assisting Tony-nominated Randy Skinner on the City Center production of Abby’s Song starring Paul Sorvino and the musical Ginger starring Tony award winner Donna McKechnie; Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Float Unveiling; "Do the Pod" commercial for Tide; Supergirl clothing line launch by Warner Bros. and Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin; Glamour Magazine at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week; Broadway at the Ballpark (NY Mets Stadium) featuring Robbie Rosen of American Idol; flash mobs for Bloomingdale's, Feiyue Shoes, and OfficeMax's "Elf Yourself" campaign which also appeared on Fox & Friends; the New York International Fringe Festival production of In Search of Stanley Hammer; and a slew of regional theater productions including Singin' in the Rain which was nominated for a Po'okela Award (Hawaiian State Theater Excellence) for Best Choreography.

Jim also has been the dance captain for eight productions including the first national tour of Tony award winner Susan Stroman’s Broadway revival of The Music Man and the original company of Nights on Broadway, directed and choreographed by Tony award winner Andy Blankenbuehler and starring former Miss America Kate Shindle. He is certified in Cardio Barre and Pilates and was a group fitness instructor at Equinox Fitness Clubs for several years.
