Peter Chu, originally from Cocoa Beach, Florida is a distinguished artist who strives to push the physical bounds of dance. He began his training as a competitive gymnast, later nurturing his artistry at Dussich Dance Studio where his evolution into dance began. As a BFA student at The Juilliard School (under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy), Chu was pushed further as a technical mover and began an explosive journey into choreography. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreography.
As a performer, Peter has danced with BJM _Danse, EZdanza, as the lead in singer Christina Perri's Jar of Hearts music video, in Celine Dion's Vegas spectacular A New Day, and with Crystal Pite's company, Kidd Pivot.
In 2008, Peter formed his own project-based company chuthis. The company performed its wildly popular show Nothing Sticks in both NYC and Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Recipient of the prestigious 2010 Capezio A.C.E. Award for Choreography, Peter has created for Naomi Stikeman's Çaturn (consulted by Robert Lepage) and ARTV series in Québec - Meneuse de Claques. He was honored as selected choreographer for the Perry-Mansfield New Works Festival (directed by Linda Kent) and choreographed for the ninth and tenth seasons of So You Think You Can Dance. Peter spent much of 2012/13 touring the USA as a faculty member with 24 SEVEN Dance Convention. He also premiered a new work for Orlando Ballet Theatre, under the direction of Robert Hill, and choreographed a full-length work for Houston Met Dance Company.
In the summer of 2013, Chu was a guest teacher at BODYTRAFFIC in Los Angeles. He also choreographed a new work at Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) Summer Intensive before heading to Western Michigan University for a dance residency. He completed 2013 with the creation of a new work for Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company in NYC.
Peter recently returned from a North American and European tour with Kidd Pivot. He also participated in Springboard Danse Montreal, the Movement Invention Project in NYC, and returned to NDT’s Summer Intensive. In July, Peter launched the inaugural chuthis. movement intensive in Fresno and commenced a new solo project in residency at The Cultch in Vancouver, BC. He finished the year presenting Nothing Sticks in Las Vegas and hosting the chuthis. movement intensive in Costa Rica.
