Sayiga Eugene Peabody is a Stevensville, MI native of Liberian, West African lineage. He began his movement training as a gymnast at age thirteen, and later fell in love with dance while working under Nancy Myers Gitlin, a protegé of Frank Hatchett. As part of the inaugural class of Berrien County Dancers, southwest Michigan’s leading high school conservatory dance program, he studied Taylor and Graham modern techniques under the direction of Theresa Cozzi Graziano. Peabody began teaching basic Jazz movement at the age of sixteen to supplement tuition for classes in Vaganova Ballet and Theater Tap techniques for more comprehensive and competitive training.
Peabody later moved to Chicago to work with Jazz dance pioneer, Gus Giordano, and Giordano Dance Chicago under the direction of Nan Giordano. There he created works with choreographers such as Ron De Jesus, Davis Robertson, and Christopher Huggins amongst many others. He also trained and toured contemporary concert works as a member of DanceWorks Chicago under Julie Nakagawa and Luna Negra Dance Theater under Gustavo Ramirez Sansano. Working with such notable choreographers as Mario Schroeder, Alex Ketley, Fernando Melo, and Eduardo Vilaro.
Eugene can most recently be seen on Musical Theater and TV/ Film stages. As a former dance captain at Marriott Theater Lincolnshire, IL, he performed in the regional productions of Cats, Anything Goes, The King And I, Sister Act, and Evita under directors Mark Robin and Alex Sanchez amongst others. He was a member of the 1st national touring cast of Broadway’s An American in Paris choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and a featured dancer on the FX TV series Fosse/Verdon choreographed by Andy Blankenbeuhler.
As the Founder and former Artistic Director or Trilogy School of Performing Arts in Lake Zurich, IL, Eugene has guided and trained young aspiring artists for over 15 years. He continues to choreograph award-winning pieces for youth concerts and competitive dance. Now an NYC resident, he is proud to join the prestigious faculty of Broadway Dance Center, to bring high-quality, technical movement training to dance and art lovers herewith.
