Sara Rodriguez is a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer based in New York City. Born and raised in Southern New Jersey, she first started dancing competitively at The Dance Connection and eventually began her classical ballet training under the guidance of Jennifer and Thomas Hanner. She spent summers studying at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York, the Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia, and the Ballet West Academy/University of Utah in Salt Lake City and went on to receive her BFA in Ballet magna cum laude from the University of Utah. There, Sara was a member of Utah Ballet and danced featured roles such as Russian Demi Soloist in George Balanchine's Serenade, Small Swans in Swan Lake, and in several other contemporary and jazz works by choreographers such as Tamara Squires, Dr. Jung Sik Roh, and Jay Kim. Upon moving to New York, Sara discovered a deeper affinity for contemporary movement and has had the honor of working with choreographers such as Janice Rosario, Stormy Budwig, Saar Harari, and Derek Mitchell, among others. Additionally, Sara has begun choreographing both for camera and for various concert and commercial dance venues, most recently showing her work at RAW Artists’ ENVISION showcase at the Melrose Ballroom. She has won several awards for her choreography on the competition circuit and accredits this to the unique relationship she and her students form in the working process, along with her inclination towards emotionally- and musically-driven storytelling. Sara also travels around the country to adjudicate competitions and teach convention classes.
As a teacher, Sara holds musicality and authentic communication in the highest regard, all while guiding dancers along a path of technical, anatomically-sound discipline. She loves nothing more than creating a space for her students to learn, grow, and thrive in this art form, and she can’t wait to share her love of movement with the BDC CTP students!
